Not sure when I'll have it up, but I've got one coming... have you ever noticed how much Jean Luc Godard steals from Fritz Lang?
Considering Godard chose to cast Lang in several of his films shows the deep admiration he holds for him as a mentor. And I confess, I really need to dig into Lang's work. Outside of "M", I can't say I've studied many of his films.
Okay - first post is up, basically why I think it matters... Hope to get another one, about a single film, up later...And if you want to check out Lang - there are worse places to start than Mabuse - which I've committed to writing about at the Film of the Month Club. Being eye-deep in Lang, it weas pretty obvious, going through Breathless looking for screen caps, how much Godard owed him, thematically, stylistically - in his whole attitude. Making popular art films - Lang's intention, and Godard, though he took some strange twists, always keeps those ties to popular genres...
